Our first visit to Borneo, August - October, 2012.
Fotos have no captions, but hereÕs a somewhat chronological description of contents:
For my long legs, Lion AirÕs seats are the most uncomfortable ever encountered. ItÕs the end of dry season and villagers are burning to clear land for rice planting. Palangkaraya Airport is small and simple, like JakartaÕs 40 years ago. The cab ride to Rungan Sari is about 45k. The air is like Kansas in the summer, hot and muggy, and smells like Kansas in the fall when we burned lawns.
The highway to Rungan Sari is flat, straight two-lane blacktop, also like Kansas, but with low vegetation like Southern Florida. Compared with Java, traffic is super light. I rent a motorbike.
Rungan Sari is laid out like a cartoon sketch of a sci-fi alien, with the entry road (single leg) supporting a big circle road (torso), the Resort Hotel in the centre, two parallel roads bordering playing fields extending up (neck) to a smaller circle (head) with the latihan hall in the center. Houses surround the exteriors of both circles and 2 short roads (arms) come off the neck. At top center of the head, a path juts up and jogs left, like an antenna, to the Mhd Subuh Centre.
Hamid and Isti da SilvaÕs Resort Hotel is the cornerstone of Rungan Sari, drawing clientele from Palangka city. Our rental house is across from the hotelÕs tennis court and closest to its restaurant. On the other side of the big circle, near Rungan SariÕs entrance is our building plot.

Hamid pushes Phase 2 of RS development with architects Halim Korzybski & Muchtar Martins.
Besides latihan 3 times per week at the RS hall or Muhammad Subuh Centre, major community gatherings are selamatans: Ibu YatiÕs in her house where son Mustafa Syafrudin and wife Litha and family live. Halim Korzybski and wife Maya for his mom at Simon GuerrandÕs house. Henrietta McCormack and I for her brother Hans. Luqman McKingleyÕs in his own home. We also visit the homes of Viktor Bhm, Bardolf Paul, and Ridwan and Tigna Lowther and his mom Liza (God bless her).
