Returning to Indonesia after 31 years, August - October, 2012. It is very different now.
With Henrietta McCormack, leave San Francisco at 14:45 on 19th day of Ramadhan. Enter ‘twilight zone’ and despite Seoul stop-over and 6-hour Singapore lay-over, arrive Jakarta at dawn on 20th day.
Jakarta’s skyline has exploded since 1981. S.Widjojo Centre is now Sequislite. Traffic is abominable. Motorbikes clog roads. 15 minute drives can take 2.5 hours. No rapid transit construction has begun. Emulation of the USA proliferates. A Giant supermarket is packed like Christmas rush. No guy anywhere wears a sarong.
Stay 12 days with Ruslan Morris and Rahaju Koosman in Jakarta suburb and visit his successful time-share enterprise Club Bali where his staff shoot a ‘Selamat Lebaran’ card.
Pak Ir. Kuswanda Wijayakusumah holds 3rd day selamatan for his departed wife, attended by his nephew, Raden Mohammad Marty Muliana Natalegawa, Indonesia Foreign Minister. KFCs serve some of the best food around---its chicken vastly superior to that of USA franchises.
With Doddy Koosman as driver and guide, visit Irwan Holmes studio. Irwan has amassed the world’s largest for sale collection of ancient Indonesian stone art and other works and currently designs and makes fine jewelry using indigenous semi-precious stones and fossilised coral.
Shooting Jakarta’s skyline for subud-world.com at Monas monument in Merdeka Square requires a 3.5 hour wait in line on Idul Fitri, Dry season skies hang heavy with smog and smoke.
Visiting Leonard and Indra van Hien and family in Pamulang, we see Bapak’s house and bedroom and the Pendopo where we return for latihan the night before leaving Indonesia 7 weeks later.
