Our first visit to Borneo, August - October, 2012.
Fotos have no captions, but hereŐs a description of contents:
Saturday Night, 1 September, Henrietta McCormack and I are invited to fotograf the Solafide Choir and Dayak Dancers in the karaoke lounge at the Aquarius Hotel in Palangkaraya city. Accompanying us is Faldi Ismail, KGC and KSK Mineral Exploration director.
Solafide is managed by Tuty Dau, international promoter of Central Kalimantan culture.
The group is outstanding, winning first place in competition in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, and the Gold Medal in ThaiandŐs Grand Prix Pattaya 2011. They tour regularly in Southeast Asia and Europe.
Besides their fine choral harmony and honest emotion, what is unique about the choir, also known as Solafide Voice, is the dramatic nature of many of their songs. Individual singers speak lines and make gestures amidst the choral singing, acting roles without breaking from formation.
The Dayak Dancers perform wonderfully choreografed native dances in costume.
Other members of the audience are mainly Tuty DauŐs close relatives: Konstantin Dau, Indri Mahar, Anti, Kupit and Wilson Mesch.
Wilson accompanys the dancers the next day for a professional shooting in the natural landscape at Rungan Sari. Also shown is Jefferson DauŐs son.
We all have a great time at the Aquarius, and for Henrietta and myself, it is the most entertaining night of our 60-day stay. Nearly everyone performs karaoke and there is much fun and dancing. These 140 fotos on 87 screens are edited from over 2,600 shot Saturday night and another 700 the next day. The night shooting is mostly in dim lighting, if not near darkness.
