ImageStory of visit to Bapak's grave
Returning to Indonesia after 31 years, August - October 2012.
Fotos have no captions and are not arranged chronologically. A brief description of contents:
Suka Mulia nestles in the mountains above Cipanas Northwest of Jakarta, a two to 10 hour drive depending on traffic.
We had lovely scenic views on our trip to BapakÕs farm in 1971.
Today all we see are an opaque and endless row of shops and dwellings.
Our driver Doddy Koosman stops at a mosque for dawn prayers.
In the early morning, I mist take shots of the deserted YUM school and the most beautiful landscapes of our 60-day odyssey a kilometre from Suka Mulia.
We left Jakarta at 04:00 and reach the gathering at BapakÕs grave at 07:00.
Departing Suka Mulia at 08:30, the main road is abysmally crowded and we take an alternate and more picturesque route back to Jakarta. The return trip is 7 hours, with a half-hour stop for lunch. The main road would have taken longer. It is the first day of Idul Fitri, and everyone is going somewhere and mostly by motorbike. We see a record number of 6 people on one bike.
Villagers burn off vegetation at this time of year, the end of the dry season, to clear space for rice planting. The haze is a gray version of Los Angeles smog.
Suka Mulia means sublime happiness or noble joy.
