ImageStory of Wisma Subud compound in Cilandak as it is today.
Fotos have no captions as yet, but hereÕs a brief chronological description of contents:
Wisma Subud in Cilandak is vastly different from my last visit. In 1981, the compound was a pristine community with a sense of home, The Latihan Hall was at its centre with lots of surrounding space. Bapak was physically present in this world. Every resident was Subud.
Today, commercial sprawl along Jl. Fatmawati surrounds the compound, an Ace Hardware on one side, a Shell station on the other. Both Subud and non-Subud live in Wisma Subud. Little feeling of community exists. Front lawns have eroded into wall-to-wall home extensions and new dwellings. The Latihan Hall is buried within the development. BapakÕs former house is a childrenÕs facility and rental. The interior of Wisma Indonesia is gutted, including the room I lived in when the building was new in 1971. The row of visitor flats between the Big House and the water tower -- my home in 1981 -- is replaced with several large houses squeezed together. The water tower from which I shot panoramas of the compound is inaccessable. LambertÕs Walk is gone. Overall, a sense of concrete congrestion.
We stay in the what was the old guest house our last night in Indonesia. In contrast with other changes, itÕs nicely remodeled and rooms have air conditioning.
At the end of Ramadhan, members from Jakarta come to Wisma Subud to break fast and for a Bapak video on the 21st night. On the 27th night, Ibu Rahayu holds testing for the women and for the men.
Amaliya and Wayne Lerrigo invite members to their home for an Idul Fitri selamatan. We visit with Ibu Siti Ismana who has a flat at Wisma Subud and a house in Rungan Sari.
Ramadhan ends 18 August and in the evening Ibu Rahayu and BapakÕs family greet Subud members observing the tradition of asking for forgiveness.
